THE HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

The Forest School was opened in 1968. It is a maintained special school run by North Yorkshire County Council. The school meets the needs of pupils from a wide area in the south of the county. The catchment area includes Harrogate and Knaresborough, Ripon, Easingwold, Tadcaster, Selby, Pateley Bridge and their surrounding areas.

The school has grown steadily since it was first opened and now meets the needs of about 130 pupils who are experiencing a range of difficulties. A new classroom building and Early Years Department were added in the 1990’s and in 2003/4 further improvements were made and a new library was built.

The school was last inspected by OFSTED in November 2008. At that time Inspectors said, ‘This is a happy school where pupils want to learn and where the care, support and guidance given to them to do so are outstanding. As a result, pupils leave at the age of 16 confident and well prepared for their future.’

In 2002 and 2003 the school won the DFES School Achievement Award for the very high standards we achieve for our pupils. The school has also achieved the Healthy Schools Award.

  • In 2005 the school achieved Investors in People status.
  • In 2007 the school was the first school in North Yorkshire to achieve the BECTA ICT award recognising our good practice in ICT.
  • The School has also achieved the Active Mark.
  • In 2010 the Silver Artsmark was awarded to the school.
