Welcome to the Summer Term newsletter. As usual the summer term
is filled with lots of activities, school journeys, and visits.
We would like to welcome Doroteo Rondo-Perez to the Early Years
Class, and Ryan Taylor to Year 10, and hope that they will enjoy
being at The Forest School.
We also have five new staff who have joined us this term, Mr Patrick
Organ, who is our Science Co-ordinator and Form Tutor for 7.1, and
Miss Lisa Frankland who is the Assistant Headteacher Primary. Mr
Paul James has also joined the teaching staff in the secondary department.
We have also been joined by Mr Nick Lowe teaching assistant, who
is standing in for Mr Poppleton and Miss Natalie Robinson who is
working in the Early Years Class.
SCHOOL JOURNEYS

This term we have 4 school journeys taking place. These activities
provide the pupils with exciting opportunities to share new experiences
with their class mates and staff. Years 7 and 8 are going to Bewerley
Park for a week of outdoor and adventurous activities including
canoeing, climbing, sailing, orienteering, walking and visiting
the adventure playground.
Year 9 are going to Bamburgh for a week when they will make many
visits including Lindisfarne, Alnwick Castle and the Farne Islands.
Class 4 are going to Cober Hill near Scarborough where they will
spend time at the seaside, visit parks and forest and enjoy the
lovely environment at Cober Hill.
Years 10 and 11 are going to Normandy in France in June. They will
visit sites from the second world war landing beaches, Bayeux Tapestry,
Caen, the D day landing museum and a goat farm. They will also enjoy
the lovely Normandy coastline. We are very grateful to the staff
who give freely of their time to enable the pupils to enjoy their
residentials.
Other things happening this term include day visits to a range
of interesting places: farms, parks, old houses, Knaresborough,
Harrogate, Theatre trips and sporting events.

FOOTBALL NEWS

The Forest School team consisting of Nathan Cawthra, Andrew Lister,
Paul Andrews, Sam Watson, Darren Peacock, Patryk Kurek, Kieran Behan
and Katie Sowden recently played Harrogate PRU. Mrs O’Hara
reports that we had a good first half despite losing 5 goals. The
weather didn’t help as it was cold and so windy that one of
the goals kept blowing over! Unfortunately we lost, Harrogate PRU
were well practised, however we enjoyed the game very much and look
forward to a return fixture.

KNARESBOROUGH BED RACE

We are lucky enough to have been nominated as the charity by Darren
Warner, who is taking part in this year’s bed race. The team
will be called ‘Harrogate Racers.’ He will be joined
by Mr Lowe from our staff. A sponsor form is enclosed with this
letter, and if you wish to sponsor the team, please complete and
return this to school. This is a great event and is being held on
13th June in Knaresborough. Feel free to come along and support
them on the day.
We also have been nominated by ‘Nuns on the Run’ who
are taking part in the Bed Race. This team has nominated The Forest
School as their charity, as mum of Olivia Geraghty is taking part.
Olivia was in our Early Years class until July 2007. Our thanks
go to both teams, and we wish them Good Luck!

NEW SCHOOL VEHICLE
We believe that it is very important to enrich our pupils’
learning by giving them as many “real life” experiences
as possible. This extends what they do in the classroom and helps
them to understand how what they learn in school relates to the
world outside. Visits, theatre trips, concerts, inclusion experiences
in other schools, college links and work experience all build on
learning in lessons. Access to transport is an important part of
all these activities so we are delighted that we have been able
to extend our school transport fleet with the addition of a new
9 seater people carrier.
CONGRATULATIONS go to Rory MacLennan in Year 10 who was recently
awarded a Centenary Grant for his involvement with the Disability
Swimming Squad. Rory is very committed to his swimming and trains
at Harrogate Hydro with the Disability Swim Squad. Along with a
number of other Forest School pupils and past pupils, Rory goes
there 3 times a week for training sessions. Due to their enthusiasm
and dedication they have won a number of medals at County and Regional
events. We are delighted that Rory’s achievements have been
recognised by this Centenary Grant. Well done Rory!
LEAVERS EVENTS
Year 11 are all getting very excited about leaving school. This
term as well as finishing off their GCSE courses, they are looking
forward to having a ‘Leavers Prom.’ This is taking place
thanks to the generosity of the Cairn Hotel in Harrogate who are
providing the venue free of charge.
On 19th June we will have their graduation. Phil Willis MP is oming
to present their certificates and progress files.
KNARESBOROUGH IN BLOOM

We are taking part in the Knaresborough in Bloom sunflower competition,
to see who can grow the tallest flower at school. A sponsor form
